Eagles coach Doug Pederson reveals when he may announce starting QB for Week 1
Throughout the last several weeks, the discussion around the Philadelphia Eagles has shifted toward their quarterback situation for Week 1 action against the Atlanta Falcons.
Things have picked up with Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Wentz taking another step forward in his recovery by being cleared for 11-on-11 drills in practice. With that in mind, head coach Doug Pederson has voiced that a decision on the starting for the season opener will be made quite soon, according to Tim McManus of ESPN.
“Deadline? 90 minutes before kickoff,” said Pederson on when he needs to make an announcement. “Privately? Probably Friday.”
The Eagles have remained firm in the entire process that they have kept a close eye on the recovery process for Wentz over the last several months. His increased involvement on the practice field has made his possible return to the field against the Falcons a strong scenario. However, he is currently listed as doubtful for the contest, which could change in the coming days if he shows enough progress.
There is no rush on the Eagles’ end of things to get Wentz under center because of the presence of backup Nick Foles despite his recent struggles in the preseason. Foles has proved that he is more than capable to step in and lead the team success for any given length of time.
This should simply come down to the team making the assessment with their doctors if Wentz will be physically ready to take the physical toll that comes with playing in the NFL by the season opener.
