Falcons could be on the verge of trading Julio Jones

The 2021 NFL Draft is quickly approaching only a few days away, which means the rumor mill will continue to ramp up. Among the most intriguing trade chatter centers around the Atlanta Falcons concerning star wideout Julio Jones. According to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network, the Falcons have received calls about Jones’ availability.

“The Falcons have received calls from teams inquiring about possible trades for All-Pro WR Julio Jones, sources say. A trade could not happen for cap reasons before June 1, but teams know Atlanta’s brutal cap situation and are calling. A deal won’t happen now, but later? Maybe.”

Although the Falcons are not pursuing a deal, it certainly sounds like the team is open to a trade. Jones is still among the game’s best wide receivers and could command a hefty haul in any move.

The 32-year-old is coming off an injury-plagued 2020 campaign that saw him plan in one nine games, where he tallied 51 catches on 68 targets for 771 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Jones is heading into the first year of his three-year, $66 million extension that he inked last offseason.

He has spent his entire career with Atlanta, where he has tallied 848 receptions for 12,896 receiving yards and 60 receiving touchdowns.

The Falcons’ potential willingness to move him may be a sign of a total rebuild. There were also some lingering rumors that Atlanta may soon entertain moving off longtime starter Matt Ryan.

The Falcons currently hold the fourth overall pick in this year’s draft.
