Giants bench star WR Golden Tate for Week 9 matchup
The 2020 season has been nothing short of disappointing for the New York Giants.
Things took another discouraging turn as the Giants elected to bench former Pro Bowl wide receiver Golden Tate. According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Tate didn’t travel with the team for Week 9 action against the Washington Football Team.
The Giants’ decision to go that route centered on Tate’s actions during last week’s loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The veteran wide receiver was seen on camera after hauling in a touchdown reception stating “throw me the ball.”
Following the incident, Tate’s wife, Elise, voiced on Instagram that her husband lacked opportunities to contribute. Meanwhile, the veteran wideout liked a tweet that suggested he should be cut to have a better chance with another team.
His first season with the Giants saw him miss five games due to injury, which he finished with 49 receptions on 85 targets with 676 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Through seven games played in the 2020 campaign, he has 22 receptions on 29 targets for 226 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
The Giants have struggled to find consistency offensively, but Tate’s role has continued to diminish. He’s currently third in targets as Darius Slayton (56) and Evan Engram (54) each have more throws to them.
Reports suggest that the Giants have no interest in parting ways with Tate this season. The 32-year-old is in the second year of his four-year, $37.5 million deal. New York can cut him after this season with only a $4.7 dead cap hit.
