Giants GM Dave Gettleman says team will draft best players available
Heading into this year’s draft, there are once again questions around whether the New York Giants concerning the quarterback position.
This has continued to ramp up due to the fact that they currently hold the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft that could put them in the position to address that need. With that in mind, general manager Dave Gettleman has voiced that the team is going to take the best player available on the board, via Jordan Raanan of ESPN.
“The priority is to select the best players,” Gettleman said. “I know that sounds silly. But last year, again, we couldn’t pass up on Saquon [Barkley]. He was the best player in the draft. You can’t do that.”
The Giants certainly went that route last year with their selection of running back Saquon Barkley at the second overall spot. Barkley put forth an impressive rookie campaign that earned him the Offensive Rookie of the Year award while he finished as one of the top rushers in the league.
That said, New York had the opportunity to take a quarterback at that spot with the opportunity to pick between Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, and Josh Allen. Instead, they decided to go in another direction while continuing to roll with Eli Manning under center.
The Giants could be in a spot to add a quarterback at the sixth overall pick with the likes of Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins, Duke’s Daniel Jones, and Missouri’s Drew Lock. There will be a slew of choices that the team could make at the draft position that will lay on their shoulders with the direction they will head.
