Giants owner makes surprising claim about QB Daniel Jones

As the 2024 season approaches, the focus around the New York Giants remains on quarterback Daniel Jones’ long-term future.

Jones is heading into the second year of his four-year, $160 million extension that he inked in March 2023 that runs through the 2026 season. Despite all the outside noise stating that the Giants should move on from him after this season, team co-owner John Mara voiced strong support for the 27-year-old.

“Listen, I’m still happy we gave him that contract because I felt he played really well for us in ’22,” Mara said during an event to unveil a mural at the Hackensack Medical Center to celebrate the team’s 100th season via ESPN. “Last year he got hurt and, let’s be honest, when he was playing, we weren’t blocking anybody. So let’s give him a chance with a better offensive line and some weapons around him and see what he can do.”

Jones is coming off an injury-plagued campaign, where he was limited to six games where he posted two touchdown passes and six interceptions. He missed the bulk of the season with the Giants due to neck and knee issues along with tearing the ACL in his right knee.

The Giants had opportunities to move in another direction by moving up in the draft to take a quarterback but chose to select former LSU standout wide receiver Malik Nabers instead.

This sets up a make-or-break 2024 season, as New York could part ways with him next offseason, taking a $22.2 million dead cap hit if they cut him.
