Jaguars fans that bought Tim Tebow jerseys may be out of luck

Tim Tebow’s NFL comeback attempt ended abruptly after his release from the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday.

His sudden departure puts fans who bought his No. 85 jersey in a tough spot. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, those who purchased the jersey can’t return the item despite having “jersey insurance” due to a loophole.

Although the league, through Fanatics, provides “jersey assurance,” the fine print becomes very important in situations like this. The program applies to trades only; there’s no protection if the player is cut or retires.

It leaves fans having to keep the jerseys because Tebow was cut. However, it shouldn’t come as a total surprise as the 34-year-old was viewed as holding a fringe chance to make the Jaguars’ 53-man regular-season roster.

Tebow had a steep uphill challenge of transitioning to playing tight end for the first time at the highest level. It placed him with the task of learning an entirely new position without any prior experience.

In his first preseason action, Tebow struggled with blocking, making a couple of disappointing plays that showed his lack of experience. All that only put the Jaguars in the position to move on from him as his struggles became too evident to ignore.

Following his release, Tebow took to Twitter to voice his appreciation for the opportunity.

Thankful for the highs and even the lows, the opportunities, and the setbacks,” Tebow wrote. “I’ve never wanted to make decisions out of fear of failure, and I’m grateful for the chance to have pursued a dream. Thank you to the Jaguars organization and everyone who has supported me in this journey.
