Jets set to part ways with four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers
After weeks of speculation, the New York Jets decided to cut ties with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers after two seasons.
New York met with Rodgers to inform him of that move that pushes the franchise toward a fresh start.
“It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures,” Jets stated via ESPN. “We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.”
The Jets traded for Rodgers, hoping he would help turn the franchise around toward competing for a Super Bowl and snapping their lengthy playoff drought.
Instead, the organization will take on a significant cap hit for the 2025 season. The Jets are likely to designate him for a post-June 1 release, which they could split his remaining $49 million cap hit over the next two years with $14 million in 2025 and $35 million in 2026.

Team owner Woody Johnson publicly thanked Rodgers for his time with New York.
“His arrival in 2023 was met with unbridled excitement and I will forever be grateful that he chose to join us to continue his Hall of Fame career,’ Johnson said.
“From day one, he embodied all that it meant to be a New York Jet, embraced our fans, and immersed himself in our city. That is what I will remember most when I look back at his time here. He will always be welcome, and I wish him only the best in whatever he chooses to do next.”
Rodgers indicated repeatedly last season that he planned on playing in 2025 if the Jets wanted him back. Although it won’t be in New York, the sentiment likely stands that he wants to extend his first-ballot Hall of Fame career another year.
Rodgers could draw interest from a few teams that need quarterback help, such as the Las Vegas Raiders. The 41-year-old is coming off, posting 3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdown passes despite the Jets’ lack of success in 2024.
