Justin Herbert reveals status for Chargers’ season opener

Throughout much of training camp, Los Angeles Chargers star quarterback Justin Herbert has dealt with a lingering plantar fascia injury.

With less than a week until the season opener at home against the Raiders, Herbert said he is completely healed.

“It was just one of those things that I went in; it was getting a little sore, and I talked to [the training staff] about it,” Herbert said via ESPN. “I think over the past couple weeks of being out, I did my best to pick up as much as I could in meetings, be out there in walk-throughs and do everything I could to not miss a rep. It’s definitely tough.”

Although he is entirely healed, the Chargers will continue to monitor Herbert’s health. The quarterback has dealt with lingering ailments over the last couple of years. Los Angeles’ success in 2024 lies on his shoulders, which only further underlines the importance of avoiding setbacks.

He’s coming off a disappointing 2023 season, where he posted 3,134 passing yards along with 20 touchdown passes and seven interceptions in only 13 games played.

The Chargers went through an offseason of much change, including several key offensive players departing, such as running back Austin Ekeler and wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. All that puts more pressure on Herbert to lead the offense with his arm under new head coach Jim Harbaugh.

The Chargers will depend on a new group of wide receivers led by Quentin Johnson, Joshua Palmer, DJ Chark Jr., and Ladd McConkey.
