Kirk Cousins says his decision came down to his ‘desire to win’
Earlier this week, Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins entered free agency for the first time in his career. It was a quick process for him where he quickly latched onto the Minnesota Vikings on a three-year, $84 million fully guaranteed deal, which is the first time this type of contract has been signed in league history.
This was a clean process for Cousins that saw him single out joining the Vikings ahead of the New York Jets despite them likely presenting a larger offer on the table. During an interview with Pro Football Talk Live, the 29-year-old said his decision came down to one simple reason.
“It came down to my desire to win football games,†Cousins said. “Minnesota appeared to be that fit for a lot of reasons. Ultimately the leadership of the organization is what set it apart.â€
Among the several teams that were interested in acquiring him in free agency, the Vikings had presented the most compelling opportunity to win. The franchise was coming off their first NFC Championship game appearance in eight years behind promising play on both sides of the field. The front office has built a roster that has arguably the best defense in the league along with several highly-talented offensive playmakers.
Although Case Keenum put together an impressive season in his first real opportunity as a starting quarterback, Cousins has proven that he can lead a team to success with his arm. He has passed for more than 4,000 yards and 25 touchdowns in each of the last three seasons while possessing a quarterback rating above 93.
This is a situation where Cousins could step in as the missing piece to the puzzle to lift the franchise to their first Super Bowl. He is in the prime of his career and has plenty to offer that could make them a powerhouse for the next few seasons. It may ultimately be hinged on Cousins leading the way with his play on the field.
