Mark Ingram returns to the Saints after Texans trade

As the Nov. 2 NFL trade deadline inches closer, teams around the league are making moves to beef up their rosters. With an opportunity to make a strong push toward the playoffs, the New Orleans Saints took advantage of that opportunity by reacquiring former Pro Bowl running Mark Ingram to pair back up with Alvin Kamara, according to Mike Triplett of ESPN.

The New Orleans Saints have reunited their dynamic running back duo of Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram by acquiring Ingram in a trade with the Houston Texans, sources confirmed to ESPN.

The reported trade features the two teams swapping late-round draft selections. The Saints made the move out of necessity as the team is lacking depth in the backfield. They released Latavius Murray in September and lost backup Tony Jones Jr. to injury.

Ingram spent his first eight seasons with the Saints before departing after the 2018 campaign. He’s currently only 89 rushing yards from passing Deuce McAllister as the all-time leader in franchise history.

The Alabama product recorded north of 600 rushing yards seven times with the Saints, including posting a pair of 1,000 rushing yard campaigns. This season, Ingram has played a prominent role with the Houston Texans, posting 294 yards on 92 carries, but is averaging a career-worst 3.2 yards per attempt.

The 31-year-old isn’t the player he once was, but he will have the opportunity to provide stability behind Alvin Kamara. The Saints may not have the same running back duo, but it’s certainly a step forward.
