Mike Tomlin shockingly steps down as Steelers head coach

After 19 seasons, Mike Tomlin informed the Pittsburgh Steelers that he will be stepping down as head coach.

Tomlin isn’t expected to coach in 2026, putting the Steelers in the position to search for only their fourth head coach since 1969.

In a released statement, Tomlin stated that he came to this decision after considerable thought and reflection.

“This organization has been a huge part of my life for many years, and it has been an absolute honor to lead this team,” Tomlin said via ESPN. “I am deeply grateful to Art Rooney II and the late Ambassador Rooney for their trust and support. I am also thankful to the players who gave everything they had every day, and to the coaches and staff whose commitment and dedication made this journey so meaningful.

“I want to also thank Steelers Nation. Your passion, loyalty, and high expectations represent what makes this franchise truly special. Coaching in Pittsburgh is unlike anywhere else, and I will always take great pride in having been a steward of this team.”

Tomlin never experienced a losing season with Pittsburgh, finishing with 201 career wins, including eight playoff victories. He led the Steelers to 13 playoff appearances, eight AFC North division titles, along with two Super Bowl appearances, including winning Super Bowl XLIII in his second season at the helm.

Tomlin was the longest-tenured head coach. However, the Steelers had struggled to get over the hump, losing their last nine playoff games, making him the first head coach in franchise history to do so.
