Mitchell Trubisky has chance to reset value with Bills

After four turbulent years with the Chicago Bears, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is trying to revive his career. He has a good chance to do that with the Buffalo Bills.

Mitchell Trubisky needed a fresh start.

Despite leading the Chicago Bears to the playoffs in two of his four seasons, it was time to go. Trubisky was the No. 2 overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, famously taken eight spots ahead of Patrick Mahomes. However, he’s never lived up to expectations.

The 2020 campaign which saw him split time with veteran Nick Foles, Trubisky. Afterwards, he was allowed to walk in free agency. The result was the former North Carolina Tar Heels star landing in Buffalo as a backup to Josh Allen, signing a one-year deal for $2.5 million.

On Tuesday, Trubisky spoke to the local media about his situation, understanding his best path forward is a total reset as a competent backup, per Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN:

“At first, I wanted to go to a spot where I would get to compete for a starting position, but the right situation didn’t come up and the opportunity wasn’t there. I looked at the next best thing. Where I could continue to develop and continue to progress and become a better player and a person and fell into this organization, and I loved it ever since coming to Buffalo.

“It’s just really nice to be a part of a great team and be somewhere where people want you here, and they care about how you’re progressing as a person, as a player. It was an interesting process, but I feel like I’m right where I’m supposed to be right now, and I’m enjoying being here.”

After throwing 64 touchdowns against 37 interceptions with the Bears, Trubisky wasn’t getting a shot to start. Instead, he wisely latched onto a contending team with an excellent roster. Should Allen be sidelined for any length of time, Trubisky will have his shot. A couple good games from the 26-year-old could reestablish his value before hitting the market come March 2022.

Ultimately, Trubisky needs an opportunity the Bills, for obvious reasons, hope never comes. Yet should it present itself, Trubisky would be surrounded by the best talent of his young career. Buffalo’s roster is highlighted by receivers Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley, along with offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

For now, Trubisky needs to be a great teammate. He should be willing to help Allen in any way, and stay ready for a fresh start.
