New York Jets missing mark with uniform remake

The New York Jets are unveiling new uniforms on Thursday. However, photos leaked of the new set on Wednesday, and it’s not pretty.

Looking at them, it’s hard not to think of a few things. For starters, the uniforms look very similar to that of North Texas, a school famous for being Joe Greene’s alma mater. Beyond that, the “New York” across the chest looks very much like what the Cleveland Browns did with their new threads. On the pants, the stripe looks like something we’ve seen in recent years out of the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos.

Frankly, why did the Jets ever bother with the uniforms? New York has a classic look, one that dates back to its glory days with Joe Namath and the Super Bowl III upset. While the team did change uniforms for 20 years from chelate 1970s through the late 90s, they eventually went back to the current kit, and it’s a quality one. Now, the team looks like a cross between an Arena League outfit and a college team.

Also, those black ones? Heinous. Whoever came up with those should be in prison.

If the Jets were absolutely going to change uniforms no matter what, why not go to the 1980s set? With that look, they had a green helmet with a jet going across the helmet, spelling out JETS. It looked sleek, it looked cool and the team was respectable during those years, making an AFC Championship Game in 1982 and reaching the postseason on multiple other occasions.

It’s fair to argue that plenty of teams change their uniforms, but more often than not, it’s a downgrade. Does anybody really look at what the Browns are trotting out there and think it’s better than the uniform worn by Brian Sipe and Bernie Kosar? How about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? The Bucs had a great look back in the day when Bucco Bruce was on the side of the helmet. Now Tampa Bay looks like a bunch of human alarm clocks. Hell, the Bucs would be smart to go back to the original helmet and colors simply for the influx of cash when everybody buys the merchandise.

With their new uniforms, the Jets had a chance to make some minor tweaks without completely changing their look. Instead, they went for broke and missed the mark, something that’s a shame considering the current uniforms are just fine.
