Packers Bring in Malik Willis’ Replacement at Backup QB
The Green Bay Packers added more depth to their quarterback room after signing veteran Tyrod Taylor.
Taylor will likely step into the situation as the primary backup to Jordan Love next season, which coincides with the team parting ways with Desmond Ridder.
The addition effectively replaces Malik Willis, who had inked a three-year, $67.5 million deal with the Miami Dolphins in free agency.
Before the Taylor move, general manager Brian Gutekunst had spoken strongly about the competition behind Love.
“I’m excited about the competition in that room and we’ll see if we add to it along the way,” Brian Gutekunst said after the draft via ESPN. “But it’s a really important thing for us. Jordan, the last two years has missed some time, and we’ve needed somebody to come in there and play at a high level to help win those games. So, whoever’s called upon we’re going to expect that and when you lose a guy like Malik, it is something you’re going to have to replace, and we’re going to try to do that.”
At this point in his career, Taylor has firmly established himself as a reliable backup option who can step in to start when needed. He spent the last two years with the New York Jets, where he started four games last year, going 1-3, and posted 779 passing yards, five touchdowns, and five interceptions.
