Philadelphia Eagles playing with house money in 2021

The Philadelphia Eagles are always under enormous pressure. Although for once, the team has some latitude to grow and experiment in 2021.

Nobody realistic is expecting much from the Philadelphia Eagles this season. It’s actually a wonderful thing.

After glory in 2017, the Eagles have slowly declined to a point of finishing last in the NFC East. However, Philadelphia is now positioned with a rookie head coach in Nick Sirianni. As well as that, second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts who is getting his first real opportunity to start under center.

With the pairing of Hurts and Sirianni taking over on the field and sideline, there’s a reasonable expectation things will take time to come together. Even if Hurts ends up being the long-term answer in Philadelphia, he’s going to have some tough games followed by flashes of brilliance. And, even if Sirianni ends up being Vince Lombardi, he’ll have many hard days compared to the easy ones with a limited roster to coach.

The urgency to win tomorrow may be there for general manager Howie Roseman and others in the front office. Meanwhile there should be patience exercised while the Eagles see what they have in Hurts, specifically. Philadelphia has a bevy of draft picks moving forward. Including what could be three first-round selections (at least two with its own and that of the Miami Dolphins, while the Indianapolis Colts will be sending either a first or second-round choice for Carson Wentz).

If Hurts doesn’t play well, the Eagles can use those picks to either trade up in the draft to select the top quarterback available, or even use them to acquire a veteran looking to move on from his current home. We’ve seen those situations bubble to the proverbial surface repeatedly this offseason, ranging from Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson to Aaron Rodgers.

The season might be a long one in Philadelphia as the losses pile up. Or, it could be a magical ride if Sirianni and Hurts create sweet music in the winnable NFC East. Regardless, answers should reveal themselves. This will allow the Eagles to plan out their future with a litany of assets in hand.
