Raiders can waive Jimmy Garoppolo at no cost if he doesn’t pass physical
The Las Vegas Raiders are once again under the spotlight after quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo underwent foot surgery.
Garoppolo’s situation immediately pushed the conversation over to his contract signing. However, the Raiders were fully aware of the foot issues. According to ESPN, the veteran quarterback inked a waiver that allowed him to join Las Vegas.

“In the absence of this waiver, [Garoppolo] would not pass the club’s physical examination because of a preexisting medial and middle cuneiform and a fracture of the base of the second metatarsal in the player’s left foot,” the addendum read.
Although there is a waiver in place, the Raiders still hold the power to part ways with Garoppolo for any reason related to the injury. He signed a three-year, $72.75 million deal. The team can terminate the deal that would not pay him any of his $22.5 million base salary for the 2023 season until he passes a physical.
However, the waiver would become void if Garoppolo remains with the team two days after their final game of the 2023 season. The Raiders hold full control of the situation, putting pressure on the 31-year-old to return from the injury without any lingering issues.

After Las Vegas inked Garoppolo, the team initially dismissed concern over his foot problems that arose on Dec. 4 last season. If he’s unable to be ready by the start of the 2023 campaign, Brian Hoyer will likely be the starter.
The Raiders also have rookie Aidan O’Connell and Chase Garbers to provide additional depth under center.
