Rams coach Sean McVay says he’s ‘got to get’ Todd Gurley ‘more opportunities’
The Los Angeles Rams have officially advanced to Super Bowl 53 after getting the best of the New Orleans Saints in an overtime thriller in the NFC Championship Game. Although the Rams are moving on, star running back Todd Gurley didn’t have much of an impact against the Saints raising concern about his health and ability to play at the high level he’s accustomed to.
Following the win over Drew Brees and company, head coach Sean McVay talked about Gurley and the fact that he’s healthy and will get more touches in the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots, via Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk.
“Todd’s healthy, and he’s feeling good,†McVay said. “He sure looked pretty healthy on that touchdown run where he ran through guys and demonstrated some explosion and what we know about him. More than anything, I’ve got to get him more opportunities.â€
Despite scoring a touchdown in the NFC Championship Game against the Saints, Gurley only recorded five carries for 13 yards which is incredibly uncharacteristic of the superstar back. C.J. Anderson, however, had more than three times as many carries with 17 for 49 yards.
The ground game didn’t get going in New Orleans, and that’s a concern moving forward, but quarterback Jared Goff and the passing were able to shoulder the offensive load on their way to victory and punching their ticket to the Super Bowl.
If Gurley is indeed still ailing from the injury that kept him out in the latter part of the regular season, the Rams will benefit from having the next two weeks to get prepared for Tom Brady and the Patriots. It’ll be interesting to see whether the running game plays a significant role in the Super Bowl as McVay tries to get the best of Bill Belichick on Feb. 3 in Atlanta.
