Rams ‘never’ thought Matthew Stafford would leave LA

After several days of uncertainty, the Los Angeles Rams agreed to a reworked contract with star quarterback Matthew Stafford to keep him aboard in 2025.

The Rams nearly went down the trade path to move Stafford but found a way to avoid trading the two-time Pro Bowler. Despite the growing doubt around the situation, head coach Sean McVay voiced that he never allowed himself to envision a future without the star quarterback.

“There was always going to have to be a decision on our part … if he wasn’t going to be here,” McVay said via ESPN. “And that was never something that felt like ever got close, and it was never something that I allowed my mind to go to.”

McVay may not have mentally gone to that scenario, but it was a realistic possibility that Stafford played his last snap in a Rams uniform. The New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders reportedly made significant pushes to land him, but the 37-year-old chose to stay in Los Angeles.

The Giants had met the financial desires for a new contract for Stafford and the trade compensation that the Rams wanted, but it came down to him choosing to remain with the franchise.

Although the Rams have Stafford agreed to play the 2025 season on a reworked salary, McVay is hoping that next offseason the conversation can go smoother in the final year of his deal.

“Here’s the positive: Last year it took about seven months,” McVay joked. “This year, about three weeks. So maybe it’ll be about two, three days next year if we have to do this.”
