According to Sarah Barshop of ESPN, Stafford will not return to practice next week because of back soreness.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, who is dealing with back soreness, will not return to practice next week as anticipated, coach Sean McVay said Saturday.

Last week, McVay said Stafford, 37, would be limited to start training camp but is “absolutely” expected to be ready for the regular season. Even after Stafford returns to practice, the Rams intend to keep the quarterback on a modified schedule, along with a few other veteran offensive players.

With Stafford being 37 heading into his 17th NFL season, the Rams being cautious with their star quarterback makes a lot of sense, especially during training camp, where risks to proven veteran players are unnecessary.

Rams head coach Sean McVay talked about Stafford’s status moving forward.

“I don’t think we can be smart enough with somebody like Matthew and I think it’s best for him, best for our football team, and that’s kind of the plan that we’ll have moving forward,” McVay said.

The Rams aren’t panicking at this point, and nor should they with more than a month until Week 1 of the 2025 campaign against the Houston Texans at SoFi Stadium. However, it is something that could become a concern if the soreness in his back persists over the next four to five weeks.
