Ravens QB Lamar Jackson is still adjusting his game
Baltimore Ravens second-year quarterback Lamar Jackson is heading into the 2019 season with plenty of focus on his development at his position.
However, there are still questions raised about his usage as a runner as the expectation is that he will be heavily involved in the running game. This was once again the focus after he had a 14-yard touchdown called back in which discussed that play after the game, voicing that he took what was presented to him, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.
“Basically [it was] what the defense gave me,†Jackson said in his postgame press conference. “They gave me the opportunity to run, squeezing out the edges, gave me the middle lane. I just took advantage.â€
It was a play that saw him elect to run as he decided to take on the defenders but was able to juke right past them to get into the end zone. This was a risky choice as it put him front and center for opponents in the open field while increasing the possibility of him getting hurt.
Jackson hasn’t backed down from these opportunities by any means in his brief NFL career and has been able to avoid any type of injury. However, this is something that many in and around the league are concerned could lead to that path.
That includes Green Bay Packers star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who voiced after Thursday’s game that he told Jackson that he wants him to slide a bit more. Ultimately, it is up to the former Heisman award winner to make the choice that is most appropriate for him when he decides to run.
