Ravens sign Derrick Henry to contract extension

After just one season, the Baltimore Ravens secured star running back Derrick Henry under a new two-year deal worth $30 million.

The contract will push Henry through to age 33, which brings forth questions concerning his NFL future beyond that point. The Pro Bowl running back chose to brush aside the conversation if this will push him to retire once the new contract finishes or continue to play after that point.

“I think it’s just focus on this year and then focus to continue to get better year after year that I’m here — that’s always going to be my focus,” Henry said via ESPN. “I love football, I love playing. I know people look at my age, but I don’t really try to focus on that. I just focus on, ‘How can Derrick Henry be better, how can Derrick Henry help the Ravens get to where they want to get to?'”

Henry is choosing to live in the moment, as he is still playing at the top of his game, coming off one of his best seasons. He finished second in the league with 1,921 rushing yards behind only Philadelphia Eagles’ Saquon Barkley.

The 31-year-old was tied for the league lead with 16 rushing touchdowns while averaging a career-best 5.9 yards per attempt. He posted nine games of at least 100 rushing yards and notched 270 rushing yards and three touchdowns in two playoff games.

The Ravens will continue to consider Henry a key cog in the offensive game plan until he shows otherwise.
