Saints announce Michael Thomas is out for the rest of the season
The New Orleans Saints are off to a disappointing start to the 2022 season, which has now become a more difficult path ahead.
The Saints announced that star wide receiver Michael Thomas will miss the rest of the year due to a dislocated toe that will require surgery to repair.
“I’m not going to get into any time frames right now. I don’t know that,” head coach Dennis Allen said via ESPN. “He’s going to go on IR. I don’t anticipate that he’ll be able to return this year.”
Thomas has been sidelined since suffering the injury in Week 3 against the Carolina Panthers. The Saints had been dealing with the injury cautiously.
The Pro Bowl wideout has struggled to stay on the field since the 2020 campaign, missing 31 games. His breakout 2019 season, where he set the NFL record with 149 catches and earned him the Offensive Player of the Year award.
Before that season, he inked a five-year, $100 million extension, but he’s been unable to stay on the field. His injury struggles haven’t allowed him to be a significator or prove his worth for that lofty contract.

Instead, he’s become an injury-plagued player that the Saints can’t rely upon to help push the team forward. His deal runs through the 2024 campaign and holds a $25.4 million dead cap in 2023 and $13.6 million in 2024.
The Saints will monitor the situation closely, hoping that Thomas can finally return healthy next season.
