Saints coach Sean Payton refuses to name a starting QB amid Drew Brees potential return
The New Orleans Saints are playing at a high level once again this season as potentially the best all-around team in the NFC. However, the team has been to be successful without superstar quarterback Drew Brees under center for the most part. Brees suffered a thumb injury against the Los Angeles Rams earlier in the season and hasn’t played since with Teddy Bridgewater shouldering the load in the meantime.
Despite concerns that Bridgewater wouldn’t be able to lead this team the same way Brees has been able to, the young quarterback has exceeded expectations and has New Orleans sitting at 6-1 heading into the matchup with the Arizona Cardinals in Week 8. Now Brees appears ready to return as he’s openly admitted, but head coach Sean Payton refuses to name a starter for the showdown with Arizona, according to Katherine Terrell of The Athletic.
Sean Payton declined to name a starting QB. He said both QBs got a lot of work this week. He mentioned Brees was limited so I’m going to guess he’s listed as an LP today.

With the Saints currently cruising having won five straight games since the loss to the Rams, Payton and company may not feel the pressure to make the change back to Brees just yet, especially against an inexperienced team in the Cardinals. That being said, the team may simply go with Bridgewater for at least one more week before bringing back their superstar quarterback into the fold.
In six games this season, Bridgewater has thrown for 1,370 yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions with a completion percentage of 67.7. Solid numbers for quarterback that was thrust into a difficult situation on a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
