Saints sign rookie QB J.T. Barrett to three-year deal
The New Orleans Saints went through the entire 2018 NFL Draft process with a notable decision to not take a quarterback with any of their selections. This had left questions. What will their long-term plan at the position will be once Drew Brees does eventually step away from the game?
However, the Saints have addressed that position after the draft. They have agreed to a three-year deal with former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett, according to ESPN.
Undrafted Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett has signed a standard three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints, a source told ESPN, confirming multiple reports.
The addition of Barrett now brings aboard a potential candidate to compete for the starting job once Brees retires. The 39-year-old has signed a two-year, $50 million deal this offseason that runs through the 2019 campaign. There is no clarity in terms of if he wants to continue to play after that point. Although now the presence of Barrett gives them a backup plan if Brees decides to step away by then.
NFC Futures
The 23-year-old is now in direct competition with Taysom Hill and Tom Savage for the backup job next season. He will have the opportunity to secure that role in training camp and the preseason to show that he can fulfill that role adequately. This could be a chance for him to learn behind a future Hall of Famer meanwhile hone his skill set to improve his ability as a passer that could help set him up to be prepared for a shot at a starting role be it in New Orleans or another team.
Barrett has shown to be a dual-threat quarterback his arm and legs throughout his collegiate career at Ohio State. He is coming off a productive 2017 season. He threw 3,053 yards with 35 touchdowns and nine interceptions along with rushing for 798 yards and 12 touchdowns. The former Buckeye could be used in some packages next season making the Saints’ offense that much more dynamic and improving their chances to be a force in the NFC once again.
