San Francisco 49ers aiming for Super Bowl victory after close call

Seven minutes. That’s what separated the San Francisco 49ers and their sixth Super Bowl title.

Then Patrick Mahomes and 21 points happened. As a result the 49ers had to settle for an NFC championship and the empty feeling of being so close to the ultimate goal.

San Francisco general manager John Lynch didn’t stand pat, making some significant changes. The 49ers saw left tackle Joe Staley retire, and replaced him with a seven-time Pro Bowler in Trent Williams, coming over in a trade with Washington. Lynch also sent Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts for a first-round pick. The selection was used to replace Buckner, landing Javon Kinlaw.

Circling back on Williams, Lynch has paid close attention to him as the veteran works his way back after not holding out in 2019. The GM is happy with what he’s seen, as Williams and second-year defensive end Nick Bosa have put on a show, via the 49ers Twitter account and NFL.com:

“I will say it’s must-see TV to watch those two. Wherever I’m on the field I try to watch the whole picture, but my eyes go right there. Two pros that are incredibly blessed with talent. But they really are technicians and want to be great, and they challenge each other each and every day. And to watch the respect amongst each other. It looks like during the snap they trying to kill each other, but then they help each other up. They compare notes. It’s really been fun to watch.”

With an average Jimmy Garoppolo under center, the 49ers need the rest of their team to operate at peak level to reach the Super Bowl — and win it. Lynch has built both a coaching staff and roster capable of doing so.

San Francisco brought back a team which led the NFC in rushing yards, the most complete tight end in football on a five-year extension, and three-fourths of the league’s best defensive line. Factor in Williams and the continued maturation of the young defense. The 49ers are built for both the short and long haul.

For the San Francisco 49ers, 2020 is a redemption tour they hope ends up with confetti falling on them in Tampa come February.
