Steelers name ‘strong leader’ Russell Wilson a captain
Ahead the 2024 season, quarterback Russell Wilson was named one of the four captains for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“He’s a strong leader, and he brings veteran experience,” said Miles Killebrew via ESPN. “He’s been doing it at a high level for a long time and I think with that experience [he] kind of calms nerves, and he can lead guys through various situations because he’s seen it. He’s seen a lot, so just a calming presence, I would say.”

Wilson earned the honor alongside Killebrew, Cameron Heyward, and T.J. Watt. The selection comes seven months after he inked a one-year deal to join the Steelers following his disappointing departure from the Denver Broncos.
Since his arrival, Wilson has locked himself into the starting role despite his less-than-stellar preseason play. He has struggled to make significant headway. Although that hasn’t deterred the Steelers from moving forward with him as the starter.

The captain designation further cements that Pittsburgh is confident he will push the team toward sustained success. The Steelers have typically elected their starting quarterback as a captain, seeing Kenny Pickett receive that honor last year, which was proceeded by Mitchell Trubisky in 2022 and Ben Roethlisberger for 13 seasons under head coach Mike Tomlin.
Wilson had earned the captain role in his two seasons with the Denver Broncos and in nine of his 10 years with the Seattle Seahawks. He has garnered that title in now 12 straight seasons.
