Steelers restructure Ben Roethlisberger’s contract to clear cap space

With the offseason now underway, there has been plenty of movement around the league. The Pittsburgh Steelers have been quite active in making moves that include restructuring star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to help free up $20 million in salary-cap space, according to Jerry Dulac of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The Steelers have restructured the contract of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, the fifth player to rework his deal that has allowed the team to shave approximately $20 million from the salary cap, the Post-Gazette has been told.
Roethlisberger signed a new three-year, $80 million contract in April.

With Roethlisberger taking a pay cut, a few other teammates have followed suit. As a result this has provided the franchise with more flexibility to strengthen the roster further. The Steelers nearly reached the playoffs last year despite Roethlisberger missing almost the entire season.

Pittsburgh mostly accomplished that behind their stout defense that turned out to be one of the top units in the league. The Steelers should have the opportunity to break through in 2020. However, that will come with stiff competition against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens broke through as one of the top teams in the NFL last year.

The Steelers are banking on Roethlisberger, continuing to play at a high level to provide much stability in their offense. Pittsburgh struggled with injuries last season and consistent play on that side of the ball. With their star quarterback back in the mix, it should see them push their way forward toward contending for the playoffs in the 2020 campaign behind a much-more balanced team.
