Texans part ways with veteran star running back Joe Mixon

Heading into the 2025 NFL season, the Houston Texans were considered a team to watch in the AFC, as they were stacked on both sides of the football while being led by young star quarterback CJ Stroud.

Even though the Texans’ offense had its fair share of struggles during the 2025 campaign, the defense was elite and led the team into the NFL playoffs, only for the squad to ultimately lose to the eventual AFC champion New England Patriots.

As the start of the new league approaches, the Texans have decided to make a move, releasing veteran running back Joe Mixon, according to DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.

The Texans released veteran running back Joe Mixon on Friday after he missed the 2025 season with a foot injury.

Mixon requested his release Thursday, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. A day later, the Texans granted it, releasing him with a non-football injury designation.

Houston parting ways was fairly predictable, considering that Mixon didn’t play a single game during the 2025 campaign due to a foot injury and could look to address the running back position in NFL free agency, which gets underway on March 11.

It’ll be interesting to see where both parties go from here on out, especially when it comes to the Texans, with rumors swirling about Houston potentially targeting reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III of the Seattle Seahawks, who will test free agency and will likely have no shortage of suitors for his services.
