Trey Lance signs one-year deal with Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers added depth to their quarterback room by inking a one-year deal worth up to $6.2 million with Trey Lance.

The former third overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft spent the last two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys but played sparingly in his brief tenure.

He didn’t play a single snap in the 2023 season and only garnered a spot start last year in the season finale against the Washington Commanders.

Lance completed 20 of 34 passes for 244 yards with no touchdown or interception, along with 26 rushing yards on six carries.

His first two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers featured him starting four games that saw the team notch a 2-2 record, with him throwing for 797 passing yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions. Lance lost the starting job after he suffered an ankle injury that led to Brock Purdy’s rise.

He will head into a situation in Los Angeles where he will compete with Taylor Heinke for the primary backup duties to Justin Herbert. The Chargers rely on Herbert’s durability, as he’s only missed four games over the last four seasons.

Herbert played through injuries last season, which he navigated through to lead the Chargers to the playoffs. However, Los Angeles is making this move to add Lance, which speaks to the team’s awareness of their star quarterback’s nagging ailments he’s dealt with over the last few seasons.

Herbert is coming off posting 3,870 passing yards, 23 touchdown passes to three interceptions, and a 101.7 passer rating.
