Tua Tagovailoa opens up about future with Dolphins
The 2025 season came to a disappointing close for the Miami Dolphins, falling well short of playoff contention.
Things truly unraveled in Miami for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as he spent the last three weeks of the season as an emergency backup in favor of rookie Quinn Ewers.
All that has appeared to lead to a breaking point for Tagovailoa, as he stated that he would be in favor of a fresh start in 2026.
“That would be dope,” Tagovailoa said via ESPN. “I would be good with it.”
Although the Dolphins have fired head coach Mike McDaniel, it appears the Dolphins have moved past Tagovailoa as the future under center.
He is coming off finishing with 2,660 passing yards with 20 touchdown passes and a career-worst 15 interceptions. It featured notching fewer than 200 passing yards eight times, which he had only done six times in the previous three seasons under McDaniel.
If the Dolphins explore moving on from Tagovailoa, the difficult could come with his massive deal, as he inked a four-year, $212.1 million extension in July 2024, which is the richest contract in team history.

Tagovailoa holds a $56.4 million cap hit in 2026, and parting ways with him before June 1 would lead to a $99.2 million dead cap hit next season. If the team releases him after June 1, that would spread that deadp cap hit across two seasons, starting with $67.2 million in 2026.
As the Dolphins begin their search for the next head coach, addressing the Tagovailoa situation sits at the top of the list.
