Vikings’ Kevin O’Connell Drops Hint About QB Competition

The focus around the Minnesota Vikings throughout this offseason has been on the quarterback competition between J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray for the starting job ahead of the 2026 campaign.

It’s brought forth an intense battle that head coach Kevin O’Connell has praised for the professionalism that the two quarterbacks have shown throughout the process.

“I want players who are smart, tough guys that love football,” O’Connell said after the Vikings’ sixth OTA of the offseason via ESPN. “Guys who — I don’t even want to say are great teammates — that need to attempt to be a great teammate. You need to repeat that time and time again because that process never stops.

“But it also doesn’t mean that everybody has to be smiling every day. When they speak to [reporters], I want them to be open. I want them to be honest, because I think it’s all part of having a transparent quarterback competition that allows these guys to truly demonstrate that they can consistently be the same guy every day and stack really good days. And when they do that, the team grows, and that’s what I ultimately care about — that position being an igniter of our team getting to what our ceiling may be for this year.”

The Vikings are hopeful that the competition will put them in the best position to succeed next season, regardless of whether it’s with McCarthy or Murray leading the way.

It’s too early to judge what direction Connell and the coaching staff are hedging, but it’s clear that Murray holds a legitimate shot at earning the starting spot despite just joining the team this offseason.

He has the experience and skill set to give him a leg up for the role, but there remains plenty of time for McCarthy to prove himself worthy of the spot. There should be clarity in the coming weeks about who will have the first opportunity to secure the starting job.
