Raiders QB Derek Carr Suffers Hand Injury; Likely Out For Week 2
After weeks of optimism in the Bay Area, the Oakland Raiders suffering a devastating loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1 at O.co Coliseum. The Raiders lost in a route against the Bengals with Andy Dalton and company cruising to a 33-13 victory, but the biggest loss may have been quarterback Derek Carr suffering a hand injury.
According to ESPN, Carr’s hand injury will likely keep him out of next week’s matchup against the Baltimore Ravens:
Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr will have an MRI on his injured hand Monday, and the team doesn’t expect him to play Sunday, sources told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.
With Carr expected to miss Week 2 against the Ravens, the Raiders have already reached out to veteran quarterback Christian Ponder, via ESPN:
The Raiders have reached out to quarterback Christian Ponder, who is interested in returning to the team, sources told Mortensen. Ponder was cut when Oakland reduced its roster to 53.
Backup Matt McGloin will likely be the starter when the Raiders host the Ravens on Sunday. McGloin is currently the only quarterback on the roster with the team parting ways with Ponder recently. McGloin has proven to be a viable option for Oakland since joining the team in 2013, but he is a considerable downgrade from Carr.
The Week 2 spread for the matchup between the Raiders and Ravens has yet to be released. With Carr likely watching from the sidelines, expect Oakland to be heavy underdogs at home on Sunday with another rough loss on the horizon for new head coach Jack Del Rio.
