San Antonio Spurs ‘Strong’ Candidates For Kevin Martin; Sign Andre Miller
The San Antonio Spurs are preparing for another long run in the NBA playoffs. The Western Conference heavyweights are stocking up on veteran talent as the regular season heads into the final stretch before the postseason.
To bolster the bench, the Spurs appear to be targeting veteran guard Kevin Martin. Although Martin is still a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves, all signs point toward the team buying out the veteran’s contract which would pave the way for the Spurs to sign the 33-year-old journeyman.
According to Marc Stein of ESPN, San Antonio is a strong candidate to sign Martin if he’s buyout before Tuesday:
The San Antonio Spurs have emerged as strong contenders to sign Kevin Martin if the veteran shooting guard secures his expected buyout from the Minnesota Timberwolves, according to league sources.
Martin would be another welcome addition to Gregg Popovich’s bench. Despite bouncing around the league throughout his career, Martin has been a reliable scorer everywhere he’s been. Martin averages 17.6 points per game for his career and could be a vital piece to the championship puzzle in San Antonio if bought out in time.
Along with being the favorite to sign Martin if he becomes a free agent, the Spurs have signed another former member of the Timberwolves in veteran Andre Miller, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical:
Free-agent guard Andre Miller has reached an agreement to sign with the San Antonio Spurs for the remainder of the season, league sources told The Vertical.
Although Miller is nearing the end of his basketball career at 39-year-old, the veteran guard is another ideal Spurs addition. Miller may not get as much playing time as Martin if he’s signed, but he gives Popovich some insurance on the bench behind Tony Parker and Patty Mills.
