Sedin Twins Announce Retirement from NHL

Vancouver Canucks veterans Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin will retire at the end of this season, they announced on Monday.

“We started the year with the mindset that a decision would be made in the postseason. But it became clear, after discussions with our families throughout the year, that this will be our last season. This feels right for all of us,” they wrote.

Since being drafted in 1999, the Sedin twins have been one of the most deadly offensive pairings in the NHL.

The Vancouver Canucks drafted winger Daniel Sedin at No.2 and center Henrik Sedin at No. 3 from MoDo Ornskoldsvik. Although they are now 37 and bonafide NHL legends, it wasn’t smooth sailing when they first joined from Sweden.

In their early years, there were doubts over their ability to cope with the physicality of the NHL. Reflecting on this in their letter to the fans, they said:

“There’s lot of people that believed in us early on that were part of this organization,” Henrik Sedin said. “If they would have listened to a lot of voices out of this room, it would have been easy to trade us because we didn’t live up to the hype.”

However, they soon proved their doubters wrong. Henrik is sixth among active players in points, with 1,068 in 1,327 games. He also has 828 assists in that time.

Daniel Sedin is seventh among active players, with 1,038 points in 1,303 games, including 391 goals. Henrik won the 2009-10 Hart Trophy as League MVP in a season when Daniel was limited to 63 games. Daniel finished second in the Hart Trophy in 2010-2011. Both of them have the Art Ross Trophy for the NHL’s top scoring player in a season.
