Sony Michel Backed To Adapt Quickly Under Sean McVay
If the rest of the NFL was slightly blindsided by the Rams acquiring Sony Michel, it seems the player was, too.
The running back was traded to L.A after the Patriots opted not to pick up his fifth-year option. Sony Michel doesn’t appear to have known much about it.
The move developed over Tuesday and Wednesday, and on Thursday, Sony Michel was practicing with his new team.
The 2018 first-round pick didn’t have a lot to say about the trade other than he needs to adjust to the situation.

“I was surprised,” Michel said. “I would assume that most people, when they’re traded, they’re surprised a little bit.”
“Last two days kind of just been, the best way I can put it is football terminology, sudden change,” Michel said.Â
“It’s like, something suddenly happens and you just got to get ready to kind of execute. Not much time could be wasted. Just kind of got to get up, get ready to go and kind of get adjusted, acclimated with the new adjustment.”
Michel will play a more significant role with the Rams than he would have in New England. He was one of six running backs on the Patriots roster.
The Rams need help in the position following the season-ending injury to Cam Akers.

Head coach Sean McVay isn’t concerned about Michel’s ability to adapt to his surprising new circumstances.
“Everything I’ve heard about Sony and the way that he’s wired mentally and just the way that he goes about his business, I do anticipate him being a quick study,” McVay said. “The goal is to have him ready to go and be a big-time contributor on the 12th.”
