Steelers Alter Uniform Schedule, Will Wear Bumblebee Throwbacks vs. Bengals
As they prepare to play the biggest game of their season this Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers have broken out a secret weapon to combat the visiting Cincinnati Bengals.
While the original plan was to wear their alternate uniforms against the Oakland Raiders in week 9, the team has revealed that they will, in fact, don their 1934 throwback kit a week earlier than expected against their undefeated, division-leading rival.
Dubbed the “bumblebee†outfit by fans and media alike, the assortment features an uber-retro black-and-gold-striped jersey with boxed numbers and matching striped socks.
The tan-cream pants complete the look, and while it may be nauseating to some, many Steeler fans have grown to love the combination, which actually looks a lot better on the field than it does in media and press releases.
Sports teams are a superstitious bunch, so it’s possible the Steelers are hoping the uniforms will bring some of that good juju they have been known for in the past. Since debuting the threads three years ago, Pittsburgh is 3-1.
The record includes sturdy wins over the Lions and RG3’s Redskins, as well as an offensive domination against the Colts last year, in which Ben Roethlisberger threw for 6 touchdowns in his second consecutive game. Their only loss? A 2012 affair against the Ravens, in which Byron Leftwich got the start at quarterback.
As if having Big Ben back wasn’t reason enough for Steeler Nation to start feeling optimistic, Sunday’s game will now be co-headlined by the Return of the Bees too.
