Super Bowl LIII bets have already topped $6 billion

Regardless of what happens on the field when the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams square off for Super Bowl LIII, a great deal of money will exchange hands.

Citing a survey, David Purdum of ESPN noted that in one form or another, roughly $6 billion will be on the line on Super Bowl Sunday.

Per ESPN:

From friendly wagers to barroom pools to traditional betting with bookmakers — both legal and illegal — an estimated $6 billion will be wagered by Americans on the Super Bowl, according to survey results released Monday by the American Gaming Association, a trade group representing the casino industry.

While not all bets are legal, the legalization of gambling will certainly lead to an increase in bets. Purdum noted that just under 10 percent of American adults plan to wager on the game in some way.

There are all kinds of different bets that can be made. The most basic is on the result of the game. But a series of other prop bets are available to be made, as well.
