Texans just aren’t hiring a GM for the 2019 season

The Houston Texans are taking the very unusual step of not hiring a general manager for the upcoming 2019 season.

Instead, the team will reportedly split the duties between current front office and scouting personnel including Matt Bazirgan, James Liipfert, Chris Olsen and Jack Easterby

Among the foursome, Olsen is the one with the title of interim general manager. He is in his first season as senior vice president of football administration but has been with the team for over a decade.

Bazirgan, the director of player personnel, has been with Houston since May 2018; Liipfert, the director of college scouting, also joined the team just last year.

Easterby joined the Texans in April as vice president of team development.

The Texans had interviewed only San Francisco 49ers front-office executive Martin Mayhew and former Cleveland Browns GM Ray Farmer.

But they also had a lot of interest in New England Patriots de facto GM Nick Caserio, who is connected to many people within the Texans organization. A move that led to tampering charges against them.

The Texans will now join the ranks of the Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, and Washington as the only teams to have de facto general managers.

Dallas and Cincinnati have owners Jerry Jones and Mike Brown as general managers while the Patriots have coach Bill Belichick and Washington has team president Bruce Allen.
