ESPN’s Own Derrick Henry Coronated at Heisman Ceremony

There was little suspense at the annual Heisman Trophy presentation in New York on Saturday, as anyone with regular access to ESPN’s various platforms could have, and certainly should have, seen the ultimate decision coming from a mile away—or at least a month away.

Alabama running back Derrick Henry beat out Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey and Clemson’s DeShaun Watson to win college football’s top prize. But as far as the worldwide leader was concerned, this was always a two-man race between Henry and LSU’s Leonard Fournette.

Henry was the early favorite, but his star happened to fall slightly just as Fournette’s began to rise. The battle played out in the headlines between the two SEC workhorses each week, with Fournette as the frontrunner going into their annual showdown against Bama on November 7th.

When the mighty Tide rolled over the suddenly hapless Tigers, the story played out so perfectly it’s almost as though it had been scripted ESPN. Probably because it had, in fact, been scripted by them.

Leonard Fournette was nothing more than an obstacle created to provide some semblance of drama to an ending that had largely been predetermined in September. Fournette has already promised to use the obvious snub as motivation in his career moving forward.

Here is how the race played out,  as written by ESPN:

And so it was. The Heisman winner, Derrick Henry, also happened to be ESPN.com’s SEC Offensive Player of the Year, and who happens to play for Alabama, the biggest moneymaker for the SEC Network, which happens to be owned and operated by ESPN.

Isn’t it funny how that works?
