Byron Scott ‘Absolutely’ Thinks He’ll Be Back As Lakers Head Coach
The Los Angeles Lakers ended their 2015-16 NBA campaign on a high note earlier this week with superstar Kobe Bryant putting on a show in his on-court finale against the Utah Jazz. Bryant scored a season-high 60 points against the Jazz and for a moment made everyone forget how bad this season was for the storied franchise.
With Bryant now retired, the Lakers brass will attempt to land another superstar in NBA free agency as well as potentially change head coaches. Although Scott’s first two seasons with the team were arguably the worst in franchise history, the 55-year-old is confident he’ll be retained by the team, via ESPN’s Baxter Holmes:
Los Angeles Lakers head coach Byron Scott said Friday that he “absolutely” expects to maintain his role next season, despite the Lakers’ posting the worst record in franchise history in each of the two seasons since he was hired.
The team has until June 1 to make a decision on if there will be a coaching change and despite Scott’s confidence, there’s a decent chance the Lakers could choose to move on. Los Angeles will have no shortage of potential suitors for the coaching vacancy if they decide to make a change this summer.
Among the notable candidates, the Lakers could look to if they part ways with Scott include Scott Brooks, Tom Thibodeau, Jeff Van Gundy, Luke Walton, and Mark Jackson.
As of right now, all signs point to the team retaining Scott for at least one more season. Scott is under contract for next and has a team option for the 2017-18 NBA season.
