NFL News: Cowboys Sign Jason Witten To Four-Year Contract Extension

Witten and Bryant are a-okay.

The Dallas Cowboys have decided to stick with veteran tight end Jason Witten for a little while longer. Witten has agreed to and signed a four-year contract extension with America’s Team, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer:

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has signed a four-year extension through 2021, according to league sources. This is the fourth contract Witten, who turns 35 in May, has signed with the Cowboys since being picked in the third round in 2003. He is the franchise leader in receptions and will become its leader in yards, and most games played this season.

With his new contract extension, Witten will likely never play for another team in the NFL. The Cowboys drafted Witten out of the University of Tennessee with the 69th overall pick back in 2003, and he’s more or less been their go-to tight end ever since putting up solid numbers from year to year.

Witten has missed only one regular-season game for the Cowboys since joining the team in 2003. That missed game came in his rookie season, and since then he’s been as reliable as any player in the league playing in all 16 games every year from 2004 onwards.

The move to extend Witten another four years is interesting, to say the least. Although Witten’s durability at the tight end position has been impressive, the veteran will be a few months shy of his 40th birthday when his contract with the team expires.

It remains to be seen whether Witten will be able to stand the test of time like other veteran players like New England Patriots superstar Tom Brady and others like him.

In 14 seasons with the Cowboys, Witten caught 1089 passes for 11,888 yards and 63 touchdowns.
