Hernandez Commits Suicide in Cell
The sad case of Aaron Hernandez came to an unexpected close Wednesday morning. The former New England Patriots star was found dead in his prison cell, apparently by suicide. Authorities say Hernandez hung himself with a sheet and blocked the door to prevent entry.
The Massachusetts State Police issued a statement shortly after the body was found.

“Mr. Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population housing unit. Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bed sheet that he attached to his cell window. Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items. The Massachusetts State Police are on scene and the investigation continues. Mr. Hernandez’s next of kin have been notified.â€
Hernandez had been found not guilty in a double murder days earlier. He was serving life in prison for the murder of Odin Lloyd. He was sentenced without the possibility of parole.
Hernandez won a national title with the Florida Gators in 2008. He and Rob Gronkowski were both drafted in 2010. Hernandez slipped to the fourth round after questions of his character surfaced. In his second season, Hernandez had 79 catches for 910 yards and seven touchdowns. He and Gronkowski both received contract extensions after their second season. Rumors began to spread about Hernandez and what he did away from the field shortly after. Sadly, they turned out to be true.
The Patriots are visiting the White House today and team officials said any type of comment is unlikely.
