Wyoming Quarterback Josh Allen Will Enter 2018 NFL Draft
On Friday, Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen said he would forgo the last season of his college eligibility and enter the NFL draft in 2018.
The junior signal caller is considered one of the top quarterback prospects this year and made his announcement just after he helped lead the Cowboys to a 37-14 victory in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl against Central Michigan.
With John Elway, the president of football operations for the Denver Broncos attending the game, Allen completed 11 of his 19 passes for 154 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions.
Allen has been rated by most football pundits and draft experts as the No. 3 quarterback who is draft eligible. Ahead of Allen on most experts’ lists are Josh Rosen at UCLA and Sam Darnold at USC.
The decision by Allen to play Friday’s bowl in Boise was contrary to a current trend where top NFL prospects are skipping their final bowl game to start preparing for the NFL draft. However, Allen said he owed it to Craig Bohl his head coach at Wyoming and Brent Vigen his quarterback coach to play.
Allen said Bohl and Vigen believed in him when he left junior college and he felt he owed them at least another game at Wyoming. He added that he loves the sport and his team and if he did not play it would not be right.
Bohl quickly praised Allen for playing on Friday in what was his final college football game. Bohl said he applauded his quarterback for playing and added that if an NFL team is looking for a player, they will not find anyone more competitive and or a better leader than Josh Allen.
In his sophomore season, Allen threw for 3,203 yards, 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. His junior season was up and down finishing with only 1,812 yards passing, 16 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. In three Wyoming games this season, Allen threw for less than 100 yards.
His production fell as well this season because he sat out the last two games prior to his bowl appearance due to a shoulder injury he suffered on November 11 against Air Force.
However, on Friday he started quickly throwing for over 100 yards and three touchdowns in just the first quarter. His bowl win ends one chapter of his football life and he now begins another, as he will prepare for the NFL draft.
