LeBron James doesn’t want ‘elaborate presentations’ in NBA free agency

There are growing expectations that four-time MVP LeBron James will opt out of the final year of his contract. The general consensus is that he will leave the Cleveland Cavaliers to enter the free-agent market.

According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, James is expected to take a different approach to his free agency experience without the use of any formal meeting with teams making their pitch to him.

James might meet or speak with a club official or owner at some point, but the elaborate presentations that have become common in NBA free agency over the years are unnecessary after 15 seasons in the league.

Should James become a free agent, league sources believe he and his agents Rich Paul and Mark Termini have enough understanding of the stakes and NBA landscape to handle the process without much fanfare.

This is a much different approach by James. He is likely looking to get through the entire process much quicker time around. In his first time in free agency back in 2010, he had taken several meetings. He met with the likes of the New York Knicks, Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, Brooklyn Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers, and L.A. Clippers.

This may also indicate something else. Perhaps James has a clear picture of what each possible suitor presents outside of the Cavaliers. The Los Angeles Lakers have long been viewed as being the betting favorites to land the 33-year-old this summer.

If anything, this signals that this may be a quick free agency process for James to choose where he plays in this next chapter of his career.
