Knicks’ David Fizdale sees team making moves next summer in free agency

The New York Knicks are in the midst of a rough patch with their playoff drought being extended to five consecutive seasons.

However, there is plenty of excitement toward what may lie ahead next offseason where the team is positioned to have plenty of salary cap space to add All-Star talent. This is something that head coach David Fizdale express much excitement over the pending situation in the summer of 2019, according to ESPN.

“[Knicks general manager] Scott [Perry] and [team president] Steve [Mills] have done an incredible job of lining it up so that we’re in a position next summer to make moves,” Fizdale said Tuesday at the Knicks’ summer league practice in Las Vegas, according to published reports. “I just feel like with the relationships we’ve built and our approach to the game and our view of players and the way we view guys and the way we treat guys and the culture we want to build, I really think we’re going to find somebody who fits the bill.”

New York has a potentially promising situation next offseason with their being enough salary cap space to pursue the likes of Kyrie Irving, Jimmy Butler, and Klay Thompson should they hit the free agent market. The former two are already expected to go that route with their respective situations.

The Knicks are highly anticipated to make a serious run at Irving given that the team was on his short list of desired landing spots in the trade market last summer. Meanwhile, there have been reports that suggest that Butler isn’t exactly happy with his situation with the Minnesota Timberwolves where he’s now not expected to ink a long-term extension.

All of this has put New York in the position to potentially become a huge factor in free agency summer to get the franchise back into relevancy in the NBA.
