Giants QB Eli Manning says Peyton Manning showed how to play well late in a career
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is set to enter his 15th season in the NFL with some questions concerning his level of performance at this point of his career.
He has entered the twilight of his career where he will be 37 years old this upcoming campaign. With that in mind, Manning has decided to talk to his brother and future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning about the expected physical rigors, according to Ryan Dunleavy of NJ.com.
“I saw what he went through with that injury and how he changed his game a little bit at 37,” Eli told NJ Advance Media at a camp sponsored by Gatorade’s Beat the Heat initiative Tuesday at Kean University.
“He may not have been able to make all the throws that he used to be able to make at 25, but he still had one of his best years ever. He had a great supporting cast around him, played smart football, and worked extremely hard those offseasons to get his body ready and his arm ready.”
Manning is coming off a disappointing 2017 season where he experienced a notable drop in production throwing for just 3,468 yards to go along with 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. This brought into question how much more he has left in the tank to be an effective option under center that could lead the Giants to success.
The advice for his brother could come in handy as Peyton had a career-best campaign where he put together his most productive campaign throwing for a career-best 5,477 passing yards on 68.3 percent completion rate along with an NFL-record 55 passing touchdowns, and 115.1 passer rating. This helped him earn his fifth NFL MVP award, which is the most in league history.
Manning has much experience on what it takes to keep up his level of performance at an elite level despite coming off a couple of neck surgeries. Ultimately, only time will tell if the Giants star quarterback can put together a bounce-back campaign in 2018.
