49ers receive unfortunate news about two of their star players
After getting the best of the division rival Seattle Seahawks in Week 1, the San Francisco 49ers have gotten off to a good start to the 2025 NFL season. However, it came at a cost.
According to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, star tight end George Kittle could miss considerable time with a hamstring injury, while star quarterback Brock Purdy’s status for Week 2 remains uncertain.
The San Francisco 49ers know they will be without star tight end George Kittle for a little while as he deals with a hamstring injury, but they also could be minus starting quarterback Brock Purdy this weekend against the New Orleans Saints.
Purdy is dealing with toe and shoulder injuries, which could keep him sidelined for Week 2’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is taking it day by day with Purdy to see how the injuries heal over the course of the week.
“We’ve got to see how it heals and how the week goes on it,” he said.
If Purdy can’t play in Week 2 against the Saints, the 49ers will turn to Mac Jones to shoulder the load for at least one week. As for Kittle, the news isn’t as promising, as Shanahan admitted the veteran tight end may be put on injured reserve, which means he’ll miss a minimum.
“When they tell me a few weeks, it’s always a possibility,” Shanahan said. “In order to do that, it’s got to be a four-week injury, so I don’t think we’ve decided on that yet.”
Obviously, the 49ers were hoping for better news after beating a division rival and getting off on the right foot to start the season.

However, the Saints are not considered to be a formidable opponent, meaning they might be able to get away with not having Purdy or Kittle in Week 2. The schedule gets a little tougher from there on out, with the team set to face the Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Los Angeles Rams over the next three weeks.
