NBA Scoring at Record Highs This Season

This season, NBA teams are shooting and scoring at never before seen heights. In fact, teams are scoring at the highest rate in 49 years.

Over the first 8 games of the season, teams are averaging 1134 points per game. As well as that, they’re averaging 91 field-goal attempts per game, up five from last year.

For a seventh straight year, the NBA is on pace to break the record for the amount of three pointers made and attempted.

Back in 2015, teams were scoring 100 points 51.5% of the time. As of game 8 of this NBA season, they are hitting that mark 88.2% of the time.

“I think guys are just getting more comfortable offensively in their games,” Toronto point guard Kyle Lowry said. “I think everyone is just expanding, with the centers shooting 3s. That just opens the floor up a lot more. A lot more shots are going up, a lot more freedom of movement. It makes it more of an exciting game.”

Of the 51 games played so far, 100 or more points have been scored in 49 of them. The scoring is so high that the losing team has scored at least 100 points 80.4% of the time.

There are records being broken all over the place. The Minnesota Timberwolves scored 136 in a non-overtime match and still lost. This is the first time since 1992 that this has happened in the NBA.

The San Antonio Spurs scored 143 points against the Lakers last week. This is the most the Spurs have scored in a single game in over eight years. In the same game, they conceded 142 points, which is the highest conceded by San Antonio since 1990.

“The whole dynamic of the game has changed,” said Spurs guard DeMar DeRozan, in remarks published by the San Antonio Express-News. “The rules force you to play at a high speed. Tempo is getting pushed. So many 3s are being shot.”
