Jon Gruden and Derek Carr Insist All is “Good” Between Them

Both Oakland Raiders coach Jon Gruden and starting quarterback Derek Carr have played down their televized argument. Both insisted that the heated conversation the two had on the sidelines during the latter part of the first half of Oakland’s 23-21 win over Arizona was not the first such disagreement. Additionally, they said it likely will not be their last.

The difference this time was the exchange was seen on camera. As well as that, Lee Smith, a tight end on the team, had to play peacemaker. He did this by putting his hand on Gruden’s back as he attempted to bring calm to the two.

Jon Gruden was upset with Carr after his quarterback had missed Jalen Richard along the far sideline on third down.

After the game Gruden said it was not the first time something like that has happened. Although, it was the first time it has been seen. He added that both he and Carr are competitors and the two had a situation.

Gruden called the disagreement mild and that it was all part of the business, but was quick to add he is really proud of Carr for all he has gone through this season and is glad he is the team’s quarterback.

Gruden is known for being hard on quarterbacks but this season has praised Carr most of the time, which made the incident Sunday on the sideline surprising to many.

For his part, Carr said he too was surprised that it has taken so long for television cameras to catch the two disagreeing on the sideline. Carr added that both of them are fiery and competitive.

Carr threw for 192 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win but suffered four sacks. The win improved Oakland’s dismal season to 2-8.

As long as Gruden is on the sidelines for Oakland or any other team for that matter, things will happen like they did on Sunday, especially between him and his quarterback as he has always been the most critical of offense’s leader on every team he has coached.
