Chargers RB Melvin Gordon diagnosed with sprained MCL

The Los Angeles Chargers got back on track on Sunday afternoon with a blowout 45-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

However, it came at a bit of a price with Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon suffering a sprained MCL in his right knee that is expected him to be out of the mix for the next few weeks, according to Eric D. Williams of ESPN.

An MRI confirmed that Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon has a sprained MCL in his right knee, the team announced Monday.

His status will be evaluated week-to-week, the Chargers said, putting his availability for his team’s tough road game against the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday in doubt.

This is a major blow for the Chargers. It means their key cog to the offense being out of the mix for possibly the next couple of games. He has been the driving force out of the backfield behind his consistent production as a legitimate dual-threat option.

Gordon is currently sixth in the NFL with 806 rushing yards along with being fourth with nine rushing touchdowns. He has also hauled in 44 catches for 453 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns. This includes recording three 100 rushing yard performances and more than 50 rushing yards all but once this season.

In his absence, the Chargers will lean on backup Austin Ekeler to lead the charge in the backfield. Ekeler has been productive this season with 409 rushing yards on 70 carries with a touchdown along with 32 receptions for 354 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns.
